Fall for us is all about this modern Spanish and Vegan design (we're certified!)

MODERN SPANISH - It's a challenge we LOVE to take on. Ever since Lucie's house was featured in a Modern Spanish spread in Angeleno Magazine back in March 2009 (thank you Jade Chang), revisiting the lovely bones of a LA Spanish is always a pleasure.

Our clients, a young newlywed couple asked us for an understated but comfortable vibe, somewhat Scandinavian for their beautiful 1933 Spanish Revival Bungalow. This classic Los Angeles house had a few upgrades already done, like walnut stained wood floors and a garage converted into a guest house, but it was in need of furnishings and paint selection.

Our self-described "giant" clients agreed that Farrow & Ball's All White paint would be the way to go for all the walls and ceilings. For furnishings and layout, we opted for matching sofas in the living room in a high performance fabric. A single bottom cushion on each sofa make them feel slightly less formal and more inviting to lounge on casually. Window treatments were a must, with rods in iron black and 22 Interiors signature linen cotton blend fabric.

The doorway in the living room leads to a charming courtyard with outdoor dining. We thought a bar cabinet would be a fun and inviting way to get guests into the living room for a drink, then out to the courtyard for dinner. Art was chosen by clients via Saatchi Art's curators.

Next up, the dining room. This Italian table is really the unicorn of dining tables. It's expandable (can be expanded up to seating for 14!) and comes in a variety of wood finishes. Not to mention it's stunning. Dining chairs are Canadian, a company that uses only sustainably sourced hardwood and low-impact fabrics. The art is by by Sadofsky Trantina (contact us to know more about them and their pieces).

Moving along to the master bedroom, we sourced a Swedish 1920s ceiling light fixture to add a touch of vintage to the otherwise very modern space. Brutalist lamps and oversized Euro shams add an additional layer of interest to the room. Art by Sadofsky Trantina.

We recently took on an incredible renovation and design project - another Spanish home - in Los Feliz for clients who are vegan. They requested a fully vegan design plan - meaning no use of wool, silk, down, or leather.

Being curious about the idea of vegan design, Lucie took an online Vegan Course - the only one available that does a certification called VeganDesign.org. It was incredibly impactful and insightful.

What exactly IS vegan design?

We learned it's the use of products, materials, and fabrics that do not harm any living being or our planet. It's really the future of design - most leather alternative products are in our experience superior anyway - colors, feel, impact on environment, durability and price.

We also learned that it's not just about the animals, but the industry behind many of these animal sourced products. There are little if not regulations and the people (many times children) who work at these shops are working in very harmful conditions.

We love that vegan alternatives are environmentally friendlier. We look forward to educating all of our clients on the benefits of vegan choices.

FINALLY - we've been nominated for TWO HGTV Faces of Design Awards !Best Before & After and Kitchen design - and both categories are filled with inspirational designs by many talented designers, so this is really an incredible feeling. The designers and projects are REALLY fun and innovative - we highly recommend checking them out and maybe even voting?
